In 1946, schoolteacher Laura Owens sought a hands-on environment for her students to observe and learn about live animals, specimens and artifacts from the natural world. With help from the community, on November 9, 1947, Owens opened a small museum in the former Sunshine School building on North Cecil Street in Charlotte. For more than 75 years Discovery Place has inspired curiosity, encouraged invention and moved millions of visitors to develop and pursue their passions for science, technology and nature. From conversations about science topics, to pop culture events, to hands-on science nights, the Museum hosts special adult-only experiences that challenge and entertain guests. Re-imagine the world of science with exhibits that celebrate human health and anatomy, and design and construction. The popular evening series has been reinvented and returns to Discovery Place Science for the first time since the pandemic on Friday, January 27.

New York-based Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) will serve as design architect and will partner with Charlotte firm Jenkins•Peer Architects (J•PA) who will act as architect of record.

NORTH CAROLINA:The state of science education

The museum was so well received that the community, led by the Junior League of Charlotte and the Lions Club, worked with Mecklenburg County to develop the Children’s Nature Museum. Students traveled from across North Carolina to visit the planetarium and learn about constellations in the night sky. Seventy-five years after opening the doors of its first small museum in Freedom Park Charlotte, Discovery Place continues to shape a future where people of all ages embrace science to create opportunities, build hope, solve problems and bring positive change to our world. Students can explore the laws of physics at the Cool Stuff exhibit, delve into the wonders of the human body at the World Alive exhibit, or discover the future of technology at the Thinker Space.

Along with its surrounding county, Mecklenburg, Charlotte supposedly declared independence from Britain in 1775. Notably, this was nearly a year before the known American Declaration of Independence. However, this fact is disputed as the declaration only surfaced in 1819, leading to ongoing disputes over the document's legitimacy.

The quaint town of Belmont has recently become a hotspot for young couples and families who want to live in a small town but also have all the perks of the city.

If you’re thinking of uprooting your life to move there, though, you’ll want more than just a sentence of niceties. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of living in Charlotte, NC. Located just 20 miles north of Uptown Charlotte is the suburban city of Huntersville.

Charlotte Is a Thriving Financial Hub.

If you’re after a saltwater beach, you’ll have to trek a bit further to Myrtle Beach, which is about 3.5 hours southeast of the city — but it’ll be worth it to dip your toes in the Atlantic. Charlotte, North Carolina is one of the fastest-growing cities in the southeast, and it’s no wonder since it offers everything you’ll find in larger Southern cities without the headaches that go along with them. Charlotte is an appealing place to settle down, with its convenient distance from both the mountains and coast, its mild weather with four seasons, and its thriving job market. However, there are some downsides that go along with living in a city, like higher housing costs and taxes, limited land and space, as well as traffic congestion. Luckily, there are several suburban cities close to the city that offer easy commutes into Charlotte.

Explore Charlotte’s art scene.

Another Uptown favorite, The Ivey’s Hotel has 47 rooms decorated to give off a “Parisian-style elegance with modern luxury” vibe. In its past life, the building functioned as The Ivey's Department Store (which opened in 1924). Today, it offers guests a range of comfortable rooms and amenities, including a 1,500-square-foot fitness center, the cozy Library Lounge, and a daily complimentary wine social. If you regularly travel the East Coast, there’s a good chance you’ve had a layover or two in Charlotte. To understand the vibrance and dynamic nature of North Carolina’s most populous city, though, you’ll need to make your way out of the airport terminals and into the neighborhoods that comprise the bustling metropolis and surrounding areas.

Whether it's a family outing, a romantic weekend, business trip or solo vacation, Uptown has the most options for every kind of traveler. It’s close enough to the city center to keep the skyscrapers in view but surrounded by Victorian architecture, craftsman bungalows and mature landscaping. Latta and Freedom Parks are both in its vicinity as well as a segment of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway. These seven neighborhoods will give you the confidence to get started on your search and find out which area is best suited to your needs. The shoulder seasons also give way to quite a few festivals and sporting events. In the spring, mark your calendar for the Wells Fargo Championship, Charlotte Wine and Food Week, and the Coca-Cola 600.

It’s ideal for anyone who wants a South Carolina zip code with lower tax rates but easy access to Charlotte to work for one of its big employers (like Bank of America or Wells Fargo). Average rent prices are around $1,300, and current homes for sale range from below $100k to just under $4 million. Don’t let the idea of a typical small town fool you, Belmont has plenty to do. The town’s main street is dotted with popular restaurants, charming stores, and there’s even a rum distillery a few blocks away.

The sergeant called for backup, and that's when the four responding Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were shot, Jennings said. Region J of the North Carolina Councils of Government, of which a majority of the Charlotte area municipalities and counties belong, uses the term Centralina in its body's name, Centralina Council of Governments. The Charlotte Regional Partnership also identifies three additional counties to what they refer to as the "Charlotte Region"—Alexander and Catawba counties in North Carolina, and Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Catawba and Alexander counties are currently part of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area or "the Unifour". Factoring in the Unifour, as well as Chesterfield County, if one considers these regions to be part of the Charlotte area, as many in the area regard them as such, the population according to 2018 Census estimates, increases to 3,190,390. If this population was officially used, the Charlotte Area would become the 20th largest CSA, overtaking the St. Louis, Missouri area, and placing it behind Portland, Oregon. The philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated $25,000 for a library building, on the condition that the city of Charlotte donate a site and $2,500 per year for books and salaries,[327] and that the state grant a charter for the library. All conditions were met, and the Charlotte Carnegie Library opened in an imposing classical building on July 2, 1903.

They made up the principal founding population in the backcountry. German immigrants also settled in the area before the American Revolutionary War, but in much smaller numbers. They still contributed greatly to the early foundations of the region. When Breeland was arrested back in August of 2023 a police report revealed he was in possession of a stolen Mercedes-Benz SUV, multiple guns, including two AR-15s and two AK-47s.

If you’re eager to venture beyond Charlotte’s city limits, these towns provide a little day-tripping inspiration. This neighborhood (which also has a massive shopping center of the same name) is a major destination for upscale retail therapy and fine dining. When it comes to accommodations, the best 4-star hotels like Hilton and Hyatt are within walking distance to the stores. If a boutique experience is what you’re after, The Ivey’s Hotel is a short drive away.

The only sovereign nation to be named for a woman, the island personifies adventure and inspiration. Her visitors invariably find themselves reluctant to leave and eager to return. Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park offers a combination of adventure and history. It has 8 zip lines, a historical plantation estate, and a traditional village tour. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. Probably not AA fault but caused a 1 hour delay. Best of all was the empty seat between me and my rowmate. Once I was in my seat, it wasn't as comfortable. Like South West(2 check in baggage free) if Alaskan Airlines could give at least one check in baggage free then it would be great.

So, no movies, no games, no music… for 9 hours. The crew just told us that there’s nothing they can do but I noticed during the flight that there were empty seats, so they could have offered to us to change seats. I think the seats on some of their planes are uncomfortable.

The village of Gros Islet has a huge party every Friday night. Vendors sell local food and drinks (including tasty barbecue), and a general carnival atmosphere turns the village into a giant street party. Listen to local bands and DJs crank out Caribbean music and spend the evening dancing in the steamy tropical heat. The flight time calculator measures the averageflight duration between points. It uses the great circle formulato compute the travel mileage. St. Lucia offers numerous opportunities for birdwatching. On the Frigate Island Nature Reserve, you can see thousands of stunning migrant Frigate birds. This stunning six-acre tropical site is nestled in a natural gorge and is home to a lush botanical garden, Diamond Falls, and Hot Mineral Bath Springs. The waterfall is laced with natural minerals, giving the 15-meter (50-foot) waterfall a vivid, colorful appearance. There are other waterfalls to admire on the island too (like Piton Falls and Toraille Waterfall), but this one stands out from the rest. You can also go soak yourself in the therapeutic warm waters of the hot springs on the site that dates back to the 1700s.

St. Lucia is a great place to explore the ocean because of its clear waters and vast array of sea creatures, including parrot fish, trumpet fish, needlefish, and more. It’s a volcanic island with spectacular reefs, white sand sea floors, shipwrecks, and everything divers could want in a diving site. Some of the most popular spots are Le Sport, the Dinosaur Reef, Smugglers Cove, Pigeon Island, La Roche (the Rock) and Birdshit Rock (yes, that’s really the name!). The Anse Chastanet Reef is another popular spot and diving starts at 297 XCD for a two-tank dive for certified divers. Guided dives for beginners start around 360 XCD. SNUBA (combo of snorkeling gear with long tethered breath tube) costs 228 XCD.

Very disappointed about lack of electrical ports. There was enough time to hand out snacks to comfort + seats as was done for first class. Was not happy that we had to wait an additional 50 minutes for passengers that were still in TSA. This delay made us miss our connecting flight in Seattle to get home to tuck in our two little toddlers. We ran off the plane and ran across the entire airport trying to make this flight only to get to the gate to see that they have ended boarding. So they were willing to wait for passengers in Hawaii but not Seattle??

The Wi-Fi went out during the flight and there was only one plug for the devices every two seats. Three out of five surrounding my family did not work. The seats and spaces under them were so small I could not fit my backpack, which I’ve always brought on flights and fit before no problem. The crew were unpleasant and patronizing.

In Charlotte, the dynamic soccer culture is shaped richly by each of the city’s diverse adult soccer leagues. Each league has its own intricate details of operation, distinguished narrative of development, and staunch commitment to a mission that contributes exponentially to the city’s vibrant love for soccer. It’s not just CASL that offers such comprehensive facilities and amenities for adult soccer in Charlotte. The Metrolina Adult Soccer League (MASL) and the SportsLink are other players in this game.

SOCIAL EVENTS

After gaining momentum for four consecutive seasons, the Checkers became champions after winning the Calder Cup in 2019. Be sure to catch the defending champions in action—and check out one of the team's fun promotional nights like Teacher Appreciation Night, College Night and Star Wars Night. Charitable endeavors form another crucial part of the leagues’ community efforts. Funds for local charities are raised through numerous charity matches held throughout the year, supporting causes from medical research to food banks and shelters for people experiencing homelessness. The specific locations of these leagues vary across Charlotte, but most operate in and around the city center, utilizing professional-grade facilities that cater to the needs of modern soccer. In total, eight officers were hit including four members of the task force, which was made up of officers from multiple agencies, and four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers.

Mission Statements

And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded. Enrich the community by providing exciting sports and social opportunities to adults in the Charlotte area, while supporting other local organizations. A GoFundMe has been started to provide support for those affected. “Today we lost some heroes who were out simply trying to keep our community safe,” Jennings said at a news conference. Authorities then faced gunfire coming from inside the home, leading to a standoff. Two people, a woman and a 17-year-old male, were taken to the police station as persons of interest. Bally Sports was also dropped in MLB cities like Detroit and Minneapolis.

They have well-equipped locker rooms available at most venues, providing convenience for players who may be heading to work or home post-game. Each of the facilities has ample parking spaces to cater to the needs of players, staff, and spectators alike. With the provision of lighting facilities for evening games, scheduling becomes flexible to accommodate participants who may have different availabilities. Evening games not only offer a respite from the daytime heat but also create a unique ambiance heightening the player experience. CASL and MASL usually run an all-year-round tournament structure with a short break during peak summertime and winter months.

Free mix n match volleyball, cornhole tournament, bar crawls, etc. The league itself has room for improvement but we continue to do the leagues for the perks. We are an organization dedicated to bringing people together through sports, social events, and outdoor activities. One of the most potent ways these leagues engrain themselves in the local community is through partnerships with local businesses. These sponsorships provide financial support for various necessities like jerseys, soccer equipment, and facility upkeep, while players enjoy benefits like service discounts. For soccer enthusiasts planning to move to Charlotte, understanding the plethora of options and immersing themselves in the local soccer scene can greatly help their transition. Engaging with local communities, participating in social events organized by such groups, and attending local games can provide a comprehensive view of Charlotte’s soccer culture. Besides the leagues, resources include soccer-focused fitness classes to help build playing skills and endurance, and local sports shops for equipment guidance and purchases.

I've played softball, kickball, and sand volleyball via Sportslink and have enjoyed each experience. I also greatly appreciate their additional organized social events that they promote monthly. Great league, great organization, and a fantastic way to meet new people and experience Charlotte. Staff is helpful with any sort of billing issues, and I appreciate their organization. The team’s mantra, “Keep Pounding,” inspired by former Panther player and coach Sam Mills, has become a message of perseverance for Charlotteans. This inspiring message can be heard loud and clear when the stadium’s nearly 75,000 seats are packed with cheering fans. There will be plenty of chances to catch a game with the Panthers playing nine home games for the 2022 season.

Like CASL, they provide well-maintained fields with the availability of lights for night games and ample parking for players and fans. Most importantly, members of these leagues testify to the profound impact their participation has had on their lives. Players often cite increased physical fitness, greater social connection, and a sense of belonging, alongside a newfound understanding and appreciation of the sport itself. For many, their involvement has led to lifelong friendships built on mutual respect, shared celebrations, and the common goal of nurturing local soccer talent and enthusiasm.

While some leagues are more competitive with stricter parameters for player ranking and experience, there are recreational leagues too that are open to varying skill levels. Regardless of the league’s nature, one is recommended to directly get in touch with the concerned organization to choose a league that best suits their skillset and personal enjoyment. The sense of community fostered by Charlotte’s adult soccer leagues extends beyond the players.

Poloche leaves behind a wife and two children, and Elliot and his wife were parents to one child. The task force was fired on by the wanted suspect as they approached the house and the man was killed in the front yard, Jennings said. ‎House of Darkness 2022 directed by Neil LaBute Reviews, film + cast

house of dark

Instead here was the most pitiable of creatures, one who doesn’t wish to be a vampire, and through impeccable manners and courtesies revealed a soft love for the Collins family, even when he preyed on them. Nevertheless, both the series and movie left a few marks on the throat of pop culture. The series certainly paved the way for more multidimensional portraits of vampires to be explored, opening the door for, yes, the Coppola Dracula movie, but also Anne Rice and True Blood. But they were sold with absolute sincerity, and in the case of Frid, a palatable conviction.

The Blue Mage FATE farm technique

house of dark

Dr. Hoffman becomes fond of Barnabas even though she knows that he is a vampire and seeks a medical cure for him, but he soon makes both doctors his victims, along with Roger Collins, Carolyn's husband. Barnabas, enamored of Maggie Evans, a beautiful governess who reminds him of his lost love, is planning to make her his vampire bride when Jeff Clark, Maggie's fiancé, kills Barnabas with an arrow through the heart. Additionally, it’s believed parents who went with their children to see the movie in October 1970 were appalled by the amount of blood and sensual subtext in the film. As a result, some may have forbidden their kids from watching the series further… with the show getting cancelled in April 1971.

Timeline

Willie apologizes and tells her that he has been busy with his new job. A frequent chronicler of power games between the sexes, LaBute excels at this kind of loaded repartee, in which characters communicate their intentions via subtext. The delivery may be too stilted to take at face value, but that’s all the better for keeping audiences guessing. As the evening escalates, Hap becomes more direct in his douchebaggery, even going so far as to hit on Mina’s sister Lucy (Gia Crovatin) after she appears, equally lovely and every bit as enigmatic.

Dark Shadows 50th Anniversary: Lara Parker Interview

Dr. Hoffman, upon analysing samples of Carolyn's blood, recognises a trace of elements of the same unknown virus that was present in Daphne Budd's blood sample. Thereafter, Professor Stokes confers with Julia and tells her that he suspects that the recent attacks in Collinsport may have been caused by a vampire. Willie Loomis, the Collins family handyman, is searching for old treasure in the family mausoleum when he accidentally frees Barnabas Collins, a 175-year-old vampire who enslaves him. Upon his release, he attacks Daphne Budd, the secretary to Collinwood's matriarch, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. She is discovered by Jeff Clark, who takes her back to the house where Dr. Julia Hoffman attends to her. Mitchell makes the very contemporary insistence that the mad scene at the opera’s centre must be more than a vocal showpiece.

When the television series Dark Shadows premiered in 1966, it wasn’t an instant pop culture phenomenon. Creator Dan Curtis was savvy enough to see the appeal in a daytime melodrama draped in a Gothic aesthetic, but he didn’t yet have the necessary hook for his central character as she stepped off a train in New England. Sure, mysterious Victoria Winters (Alexandria Isles) would meet the Collins family, who more or less ruled over the town of Collinsport from their ancestral home of Collinwood, but the reason to stick around only came about a year into the series’ original run. After the party, Barnabas returns to the Old House and ruminates about the tragic death of his beloved Josette. He tells Willie that Maggie is the reincarnation of Josette and he intends to make her his bride.

This is just the most efficient FATE farming technique, and if your Blue Mage isn’t leveled or if you don’t want to do all that unlocking, you should just join FATEs as your favorite job and whack stuff until it dies. Remember that you need to let the enemy cast the spell first and then you can kill them to possibly learn the skill. It’s not a guaranteed drop unless you do the content level synced or in a full premade party. You can also use the Blue Mage instadeath combo to quickly wipe out non-boss enemies. Use “Hydropull” to pull all the enemies towards you, “The Ram’s Voice” to freeze the enemies around you, and then “Ultravibration” to instantly kill any frozen enemies around you. You should also make sure to check the FATE section of party finder, as there’s quite a few groups always looking for more people to help farm out medals.

In what must've seemed like a luxury, Jonathan Frid had time to learn ALL his lines. Vampires have to drink human blood, which must be even more boring than a cottage-cheese diet. And a strict high-protein diet like blood could lead, over the centuries, to vitamin deficiency. In spite of its shortcomings, many have fairly speculated on whether Curtis’ Dracula influenced James V. Hart, the screenwriter of Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Professor T. Eliot Stokes, a friend of the family, confers with Julia and tells her that the recent attacks in Collinsport may have been caused by a vampire. Julia is more clinically minded than Stokes, and has difficulty believing his wild claim. C. Fields once observed that the only permanent cure for hangovers is death. But even death is no help if you're a vampire, because you're already dead. No, you've got to find some friends cooperative enough to flash crucifixes at you, whirl garlic around on a string and hold a mirror up to your eyes (so you can see you're invisible). And thus distracted, you can hope they've had the decency to bring along a wooden stake and put you out of your misery.

Washington's Cellar

Todd again sneaks out in search of Carolyn, but she is cornered and staked, instantly killing her. Later, Barnabas introduces himself to the family under the guise of a "cousin from England". Elizabeth and the others are intrigued by Barnabas and take an instant liking to him. However, Elizabeth's daughter, Carolyn Stoddard, and Professor T. Eliot Stokes, a friend of the family, are incredulous. Barnabas insists on moving into the Old House and hosting a ball in honour of the family. But on the night of the ball, Carolyn is bitten by Barnabas while she is getting ready.

But is infidelity enough to justify whatever Mina and her sister(s) have in store? But he’s too buzzed and too horny to care, and besides, this clumsy pickup artist isn’t being entirely honest with her either. When Mina asks whether he’s married, Hap offers a cryptic “Not at the moment.” And though he doesn’t overtly pressure her for sex, there’s innuendo in practically everything he says. Part cautionary tale, part post-#MeToo ghost story, this sly chamber piece uses silence and darkness to its advantage, allowing audiences’ imaginations to fill in the spaces and shadows of an atypical one-night stand. It has the unique distinction of being the only motion picture ever based on a daytime soap opera.

Stokes confronts Julia about helping Barnabas—and realizes she is in love with him—and reminds her that he is in love with Maggie. Overcome with jealousy, Julia gives Barnabas an injection which causes him to age rapidly. A terrified Maggie witnesses this and tries to flee, but is caught and bitten by Barnabas before she can escape, and he vows to come back for her. Jeff soon returns, and he is informed of the family history by Stokes and Roger and that Barnabas intends to make Maggie his bride. That night, Barnabas bites Maggie again, rejuvenating him, and then abducts her. Jeff finds Barnabas placing Maggie's unconscious body onto an altar.

According to the family records, Barnabas was meant to marry Josette, but the wedding never took place. Not only that, the anniversary of Josette's death is the following night, and Stokes is convinced that Barnabas will take Maggie as his bride that night. Stokes and Roger decide to explore the coves and islands surrounding Widows' Hill. Over the course of several days, the process begins to take effect. Taking advantage of his newfound lease on life, he begins spending more and more time with Maggie Evans.

Hart was certainly more successful at turning Dracula into a lovelorn prince, and Coppola made that idea permanent in the pop culture imagination. Yet, at the end of the day, they were still remaking the pop culture image of Dracula so as to be closer in line with Barnabas Collins, instead of the other way around. Curtis was in essence trying to recast Dracula as Barnabas Collins.

It very much has the narrative beats of a traditional vampire movie, but the charm that lingers a half-century later comes in part from seeing these actors, who are intimately familiar with their characters, going through the paces with better production values. That quality also manifests in Curtis’ sense of atmosphere, now liberated from the stage-bound quality of daytime drawing room drama. I would even argue House of Dark Shadows is one of the more satisfyingly atmospheric vampire movies to come out of the 1970s. House of Dark Shadows turned a beloved daytime soap adored by children into a wild B-movie bloodbath. Dark Shadows producer Dan Curtis's original idea had been to edit together footage from the original TV series into a feature-length film, an idea which was quickly abandoned.
